Loving Memory

 

Ethel (Nina) McCracken 1910 - 1997    Don't let your heart be troubled, Don't let yourself be blue, My body is no longer on this earth, There is nothing more that you can do. My life was a good one, My years on earth were long, Now friends and all my loved ones, It is time to continue on. Release all that hostile anger, There is too much of that in the world, They only took my body Love, They never got my soul, For that was given long ago and now I reap my reward. There was no time to say goodbye, I guess there's a reason why, Although I am not on Rockett Street, You can visit me anytime.     Just lift your eyes to Heaven, And open your heart with love, I'll be with you every moment, I'll watch over you from above.

My grandmother was murdered in her home in August of 1997 at age 87.  She was my best friend and is still missed so much by those of us who knew and loved her.  I wrote this poem for her back then and want to now share it with others.  It is my hope that it will help heal, in some small way, the pain and loneliness felt by those of us who are "left behind."

Charles, I miss you dear brother. You were all I had left on our side of the family. I think of you every day. We had a rough childhood, we were not loved by anyone after mom died. We were sent to orphanages and robbed of each others friendship as brother and sister growing up. We had bad breaks all our lives. I wish you didn't have to leave me. I love you dear brother, and I miss you with all of my heart. I never even got to say goodbye. I will always love you.

  Our Pop was the best Poppy that a Grandchild could ever have, but he had to go home and be with God because he was very sick and in pain and we didn't like watching him suffer.  Poppy, we miss you and love you very much.  You are always in our hearts and will never be forgotten.  Rest In Peace Poppy.  How many apple pies have you eaten up there already?  A lot, huh?  Eat one for us.
